Beef, milk prices soar

Hosting that summer BBQ is going to take a bigger bite out of your wallet than in recent months.

A rise in beef prices means burgers, brats and steaks are now much higher in price. Some are calling it a barbecue season bummer.

The U.S. Department of Labor says the price of ground beef is up 11 percent since last spring. Pork prices have risen 9 percent. Fish is up 4 percent and milk is up almost 8 percent.

Some experts believe that beef prices won't go down for two more years.

But Kansas City area chef Jasper Mirabile Jr. believes we will see relief sooner. The Jasper's restaurant owner also says restaurants may not automatically raise their prices.

"Our prices have not increased. I'm not jumping the gun," he said. "We will ride through it and after three to five months we will look and see maybe we need to make changes but I will never say take it off the menu."

He said there are ways to cut down on costs while keeping protein on your table.

"Red meat is quality over quantity," he said. "Just buy another cut of meat."

He said you can have smaller entree portions and bulk up with side items so you buy less meat.

"In Costa Rica, we have beans and rice and fill up on that," he said.
