Area drivers vent frustrations with GM

As the number of vehicles recalled by General Motors mounts, area drivers are venting their frustrations about getting the needed repairs made.

Some drivers haven't been able to get repairs made for months because of the delay in getting parts. Jennifer Maddox needs repairs made to her 2005 Pontiac G6 GT.

"I have a young child and that scares me honestly," she said.

She said her power steering can go out and is warned about that.

"I don't know if my car will start veering or what's going to happen," she said.

The Associated Press reported that if the powering steering assist is lost then a message displays and a chime sounds to warn the driver. Steering control can be maintained because the vehicle will revert to manual steering, but greater driver effort would be required at low vehicle speeds, which could increase the risk of a crash.

Maddox desperately wants the repairs made, but the parts aren't ready for her vehicle. So she's forced to wait anxiously.

"If it is a safety issue why do we have to wait so long to get the parts?" she asked.

She said she wishes she had other options but can't afford to stop driving her vehicle to and from work.

If your call is on a recall list, call your dealership as soon as possible. Some car owners have been able to get a loaner car for weeks if not months while waiting for their cars to be repaired. Ask your dealership if you qualify for a loaner car or check with GM.
