A junior varsity volleyball coach at Agawam High School was charged with statutory rape after he allegedly engaged in a sexual relationship with a 15-year-old girl earlier this year.

Michael Rash, 24, of Westfield, was arraigned on two charges of statutory rape of a child in Westfield District Court June 6.

According to a police report, Rash's relationship with the teen took place between March and May 2014.

The relationship began with texts, Snapchat messages and social media messages before it led to two late-night sexual encounters, the arrest report indicated.

The superintendent of schools sent a letter home to parents June 11 notifying them of the inappropriate relationship and the arrest that was made as a result of it.

Rash, who was not a school staff member, is no longer coaching at the school. His responsibilities were limited to coaching.

Rash was released on $1,000 bail and is due back in court July 3.
