Crooks hit Bonner Springs car and bike shop again

Posted: Updated:

Crooks at it again at a Bonner Springs car and bike shop were caught on tape. It's the second time the place has been hit in the past two weeks.

Midwest Motors' owners say thieves targeted a truck first. They were able to bust out the lock and the key cylinder to start the truck. Police said the thieves also stole a Jeep and it's all caught on security cameras.

"They just don't care," said Greg Woolard while watching the video. "Oh, here he comes again - pries open the back of the Jeep."

Before Woolard got to work and saw the video of another theft at his shop he got a call from Shawnee, KS, police asking if the Jeep was stolen.

"They said 'We have it here on Interstate 435 and Shawnee Mission Parkway. It's been flipped end over end.' I said 'darn, I just got that thing yesterday and it was a nice Jeep,'" he said.

Bonner Springs detectives are pouring over the security video, working with Shawnee police, and say they have some good leads. Woolard and his shop partner Simon Gallagher don't think the same people hit each time.

"We keep getting hit by car thieves and they're stealing our trailers, everything that's not bolted to the ground like a safe," Woolard said.

It's frustrating for the two friends who've been in business in downtown Bonner Springs for seven years.

"It's how we make our living. I work 80 to 90 hours a week, been doing it straight for seven years," Woolard said. "I keep the bills paid, the lights on and thieves just want to take it from you as fast as you can try to make it. It's hard enough without them."

Woolard said if it keeps up, Midwest Motors will have to close up shop.

There are signs posted all over the Midwest Motors lot warning people that video surveillance is in use. The shop partners say it's sad the criminals don't seem to even care about cameras.

They said they've asked the city about putting up a fence as added protection, but were told they can't because a fire hydrant is on their lot.
