Shock sets in as only grocery store in Armourdale neighborhood to close

Posted: Updated:

The news their one and only grocery store is closing came as a shock to folks living in the Armourdale neighborhood in Kansas City, KS.

The owner of Lipari Brothers Thriftway said they could just no longer compete.

"Well I'm sad," John Lawrence exclaimed.

He turns 62 on Thursday, but this was not the kind of birthday he was hoping for. The grocery store he's been going to since he was a kid is closing.

"This here is real close to my house and I know where everything is with my eyes shut," he said.

Lawrence is physically challenged and said it will be tough finding a grocery stores this convenient.

"It's going to be hard," he said.

Store owner Johnny Lipari said he's noticed fewer customers in his aisles and with the big stores moving in, it's time to close.

"To make this decision, I probably should have made it three years ago," Lipari said. "I tried to hang on and keep everybody working, just right now I can't do it."

Customers say it's more than just the groceries at the store, it's the people and the relationships they've made over the last six decades that kept them coming back.

"The people, the owner," said customer Erika Suarz.

"The brothers are really good guys. You can't beat these guys," said customer Roger Stroble.

"I'm very sad about it because this is the only store we had," said customer Antonio Gatlin.

It's a sad week for employees as well.

"I am looking for something else and it's real hard right now," said Christina Lewis.

There is no set date for the closing, but the owners says the doors will probably close in two weeks.
