All the rain has created some big messes around the metro. Debris clogged up drains, causing problems for some homeowners Tuesday.
It was a lot of rain in a short amount of time and the sheer amount started to cause the city's sewer lines to get backed up. One woman who lives just off of State Line Road near West 69th Street had a close call when she found eight inches of water in her basement in the morning.
"I opened the door and went 'Oh my gosh!' and saw a cooler floating by," Theresa Otto said.
Otto has lived in her house for nearly 15 years and has never had trouble with water in her basement, but Monday and Tuesday's rains were just too much.
"Water was just pouring out like a faucet here and here, and another spot over there. It just looked like a kitchen faucet was running," she said, pointing to different locations on her basement's wall.
To make matters worse, the drainage line from her house was backed up. A crew from public works had to flush out a nearby main and a friend of hers helped clear her basement drain.
"All of a sudden water just started to flush out the drain. It was amazing. Best sound I ever heard. I just had the perfect combination. A backed up sewer main in front of my house, water pouring into my basement and nowhere to go," Otto said.
Fortunately the large mess in her basement damaged very little.
"I'm not a pack rat. My Christmas tree is toast. Other than the cleaning people coming in and helping me clean up what's probably mold and maybe sewage, I think that's all I'm going to have. So I got very lucky," Otto said.
The section of West 69th Street near State Line Road has been closed for the last several weeks for work on the sewer lines.
