WESTCHESTER, NY (NY1/CNN) - The New York Knicks announced Tuesday that Derek Fisher is their new head coach.

Fisher just wrapped up his NBA career playing last season for the Oklahoma City Thunder.

The Fisher, 39, says he is ready to put his experience as a player to work as a coach.

"I'm so thankful for this opportunity, I really am. I've obviously played basketball for a long time and learned a great deal from not only some of the greatest coaches in the game, this gentleman here obviously left himself off of the list that he ran down a few minutes ago some of the great coaches that I was fortunate enough to play for in my basketball career, but also coaches in high school, coaches as a kid, every experience that I've gained in the sport of basketball all leads to this moment," Fisher said.

Fisher will be working for his former coach Phil Jackson who is president of the Knicks.

The two won five NBA championships when Jackson coached and fisher played for the LA Lakers.

Fisher replaces Mike Woodson who was fired after the Knicks failed to make the playoffs this season.
