BONNER SPRINGS, KS (KCTV) -

A thief targeting downtown Bonner Springs has local shops and police on the lookout.

"There they go with all their stolen stuff and our stolen trailer, in the pouring down rain," said Midwest Motors co-owner Simon Gallagher as he watched a video of a crook stealing from his car and bike shop.

Police want the public to take a look at the surveillance Midwest Motors was able to pull from their cameras of the crooks taking off with more than $13,000 worth of air conditioning units and equipment.

Thieves hit Midwest Motors and three other downtown businesses on June 2. Police say even though it was a stormy night in Bonner Springs, the suspect stole the trailer in a matter of minutes.

The rainy weather hinders the quality of the video, but police say the suspect is an older white man in a 1994-1999, two-toned Dodge pick-up.

In the Midwest Motors surveillance, the suspect placed industrial-sized air conditioners in the back of the truck.

Police say those were stolen before midnight from The Pink Zebra Boutique, Heartland Auto and Go Lizards Pet Shop and Dog Grooming in downtown Bonner Springs.

"Regular-cab Dodge Ram, two-wheel drive ... then you can see the passenger door swing open, so there were two people. We didn't catch that until we watched it a couple of times," Gallagher said as he described the make and model of the pickup and the driver stealing his stuff.

Another important detail on the truck is a hood ornament.

Gallagher said the hood ornament looks like an older Dodge Ram "head" which used to come standard on older models of the Dodge truck, making it look like the detail was added to the 1990's truck.

"Really safe town nothing crazy ever happens really, so this is kind of a big shock for us," said Bonner Springs native and The Pink Zebra employee Cord Cannon.

It has been hot for downtown shops, like the Pink Zebra, but not for sales. Cannon said sales may have suffered as a result of the air conditioners being stolen.

"Just the effect on sales and for the people working it is kind of hot and uncomfortable all day," Cannon said.

Next door at Go Lizards, the snakes liked it hot and no heat lamps are required while the air conditioning was off, but owner Jason Cruse had to keep close watch on the health of the other animals in the shop.

"We didn't want to lose any animals, people that go and steal things don't think about the reaction of the animals especially in a store like this where half the things are alive in here," Cruse said.

Detectives working the case said they haven't had criminal activity like this in years, but Gallagher said his shop partner just had his home burglarized, and he's not shocked by the air-conditioner thieves.

The crime spree is not something local shop owners want to see repeated. They hope someone will know something after seeing the video and call the police.

"People are just out to take whatever they can," Cruse said. "You've got your hard working people working for what they got and you got and people take it right from you."

If you know anything about this crime, call Bonner Springs police at 913-422-7800.
