Tyler Smallwood, left, and Mathew Volland, knew 25-year-old Forrest Fuller, the man they are accused of killing.
CASS COUNTY, MO (KCTV/AP) -
Two teenagers have been charged in the death of a 25-year-old man whose body was found last week near a cemetery.
Mathew E. Volland, 18, of Raymore, and Tyler J. Smallwood, 18, of Peculiar, were charged Monday with first-degree murder and armed criminal action in the shooting death of Forrest D. Fuller.
Fuller's body was found June 4 near the Wills Cemetery in rural Peculiar, which is about 30 miles south of Kansas City.
Prosecutors say he was shot multiple times. And while they are being tight-lipped about a possible motive, they did say that all three men knew each other.
Cass County authorities said Volland went to meet Fuller to fight him after an argument. Smallwood was hiding in the passenger's seat with a rifle.
Prosecutors would not say what the argument was about.
Smallwood allegedly fired from the vehicle hitting the victim. According to court documents, the men decided to unload on the victim to make sure he could not be a witness. But someone heard the gunshots and saw the vehicle as it fled.
Cass County Sheriff Dwight Diehl said the Metro Squad helped them solve the case.
"They put in 1,200 hours, our squad did. If they hadn't helped us it would have taken weeks maybe even longer to gather that information," Diehl said.
Investigators said they contacted a person who the victim called shortly before he was killed, and found that person "closely associates" with Volland, who drives a vehicle matching a witness' description. Authorities also recovered the weapon from a site where a 16-year-old girl told them it was buried, according to the probable cause statement.
Deputies say Volland walked himself into the sheriff's department, while deputies are awaiting Smallwood's extradition from Dodge City, KS, where he's being held.
Both of their bonds have been set at $500,000 each.
KCTV5's Heather Staggers reached out to the victim's family, but his father did not wish to speak with her at this time.
