WEST CHESTER, OH (FOX19) -
West Chester Township Police on Thursday announced that a West Chester man has been charged with aggravated vehicular homicide in connection with a fatal accident last week.
Terrence Strader, 32, turned himself into police Thursday morning. He could be arraigned Friday.
Police said the first accident happened at approximately 8:30 a.m. on Ohio 747 between Mackenzie Court and Union Centre Boulevard. Strader rear ended a Honda Civic driven by Christy Martin of Hamilton who was traveling southbound on Ohio 747. Strader passed Martin and continued southbound on Ohio 747.
About five minutes later at Ohio 747 and Port Union, police said Strader caused a second accident. He ran a red light and struck a Toyota Prius driven by Troy Stapelton, 62, of Fairfield.
Stapelton, who worked at Universal Transport Systems in Fairfield and was driving a company vehicle, died at the scene. Strader was taken to West Chester Hospital.
FOX19 obtained records showing that Strader has been involved in a previous accident that resulted in injuries and a lawsuit.
Aircare responded to a 2012 accident where Strader reportedly hit a tree, sign and pole when exiting Interstate 71. The other driver involved in that accident sued Strader for $25,000, claiming he suffered "severe and permanent injuries to mind and body", according to court documents.
Aggravated vehicular homicide is a third degree felony with a possible prison sentence of 1-5 years and a $10,000 fine.
Also in connection with the Port Union Road accident, police charged Strader with operation in willful or wanton disregard of the safety of persons or property. That's a minor misdemeanor.
In the Mackenzie Court accident, police charged Strader with assured cleared distance ahead (a minor misdemeanor) and leaving the scene of an accident (a first degree misdemeanor).
A minor misdemeanor has a fine up to $150. A first degree misdemeanor has a possible sentence of up to six months in jail and a maximum $1,000 fine.
