KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Police are calling the death of a woman found on a playground a homicide, but are saying very little else.

Kansas City police were called at 8:10 a.m. to the 7000 block of Crabapple Lane, located near Interstate 435 and Eastwood Trafficway, to check on someone laying on the playground.

When officers arrived, they found Shaunda L. Thomas, 35, dead at the scene at the Maple Hills Apartment Homes.

Those living in the eastside apartment complex said the news was a rude awakening for them.

"Dead people coming up on my complex, that's kind of messed up," said Matthew Bland who lives at Maple Hills.

Neighbors say they've never seen a scene like it before.

"It's surprising. I saw the tape and I was like 'what's going on,'" Bland said.

According to police, Thomas had obvious signs of injuries, and they have determined she was killed.

"Oh I can't believe it," said a woman who lives at the apartment complex, but didn't want to give her name.

She said she's never seen anything like this at the apartment.

"It's a nice place. I would never think that they would find a dead body in one of the complexes," the woman said.

She did say the incident will change her daily routine.

"It makes me more aware of my surroundings and my comings and goings from day-to-day," the woman said.

Despite the incident, both she and Bland said they aren't moving from Maple Hills.

"It's still pretty safe. Stuff happens," Bland said.

Anyone with information is urged to call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
