Gerald Cullumber has unexpectedly quit as Gardner's police chief after just a year on the job.

The surprise resignation was announced at a City Council meeting on Tuesday.

Sgt. James Belcher Jr. has been appointed acting police chief. He has been a sergeant since 2000 and joined the department in 1998. He supervises the department's field training program.

City Administrator Cheryl Harrison-Lee said city leaders will recruit a new police chief.

"I have every confidence that the police department will continue to provide excellent police services to our community during this time of transition," she said in a news release.

The Johnson County city has seen its share of turmoil in 2014. A divided school board fired the Gardner superintendent and two of his top administrators with little notice.
