Strong storms with super cell tornadoes possible Tuesday - KCTV5

Strong storms with super cell tornadoes possible Tuesday

FAIRWAY, KS (KCTV) -

A developing storm system is expected to bring heavy rain and a risk of severe thunderstorms, including the possibility of a few strong tornadoes in the central High Plains Tuesday.

The Storm Prediction Center has put parts of the KCTV5 viewing area under a moderate risk for severe thunderstorms. Maryville, Trenton and Chillicothe are included in the elevated risk area where damaging winds and large hail are most likely.

Supercells that can produce tornadoes cannot be ruled out, says KCTV5 meteorologist and traffic anchor Lisa Teachman.

The north and east sides of the Kansas City metro are included in the slight risk area where a few isolated strong to severe storms are possible.

The storms are expected to start firing late Tuesday afternoon and could linger into Wednesday morning.

Teachman says most of Tuesday will be dry, but muggy and hot. Highs will approach 90 degrees.

The National Weather Service is warning that this could be a significant severe weather event.

Those living in northern Kansas, northern Missouri, southern Nebraska or southern Iowa could see the potential for a very strong complex of thunderstorms Tuesday night.

"Areas north of High 36, which runs east and west out of St. Joseph, stand the best chance of seeing stronger storms," Teachman said.

The window for these storms is expected between 6 p.m. Tuesday and 3 a.m. Wednesday.

If the storms track to the south, which Teachman says is a possibility with these types of complexes, then the Kansas City area could get hit.

The storms will be out of the area by dawn on Wednesday.

Highs will cool slightly into the upper 70s by the end of the work week. There are more chances for storms through Friday and into the weekend.
