Powell Gardens now home to giant bronze animals

KINGSVILLE, MO (KCTV) -

Bears and even an elephant have been spotted among the flowers at Powell Gardens, located southeast of Kansas City.

A soaring eagle, a pig munching on vegetables and a buffalo overlooking the plains are just a few of the giant bronze animals Amy Abbington's kids can romp and play with at the botanical garden in Kingsville, MO.

"It's much fun to see the little bears frolicking. We love the elephant and how they incorporated it with the fountain so it squirts out. It's really fun to see," the mother said.

That's just fine with the sculptor, Dan Ostermiller created the metal menagerie and said he'd much rather see his work outdoors than in a museum.

"Out here people can really experience the sculptures the way I really want them to be experienced. It invites them to go up and touch it and feel it and walk around it," he said.

The first thing visitors notice about the sculptures is their personalities - each statue has their own. The artist said that's exactly his intention.

"I'm able to create my own animal. It's not just a sculpture of a bear. It's a sculpture of my bear. So much of my personality goes into these pieces. I think people can really relate to that when they see them," Ostermiller said.

"You can really see the expressions in the animal's faces. He's doing amazing work," Abbington said.

The collection includes nearly thirty animals, each placed in their natural habitat and each one an educational way to interact with nature.
