KCMO's Public Works Department is advising residents to avoid using red trash bags for disposal of household garbage because it won't get picked up.

The department received numerous complaints this week that they had not picked up the weekly trash, but the city said there's a reason the bags were passed by.

Several people told public works that they bought the red bags from someone selling them door-to-door. A number of those residents have purchased and used the red trash bags for household trash collection and disposal.

Public works crews cannot collect red bags left on the curb because red trash bags are normally used to dispose of hazardous biological waste, which cannot be collected by city crews with regular curbside trash.

"Very specific disposal methods have to be used for biological waste, and private services contract with individuals for biological waste disposal," said Michael Shaw, solid waste services manager, in a news release. "We can't just throw it in the landfill."

The city is warning others to not purchase the bags for curbside trash use.

"They are bio-hazard bags, I wouldn't buy anything like that," said customer Sheila Smith.

A city spokesperson said landfills will not accept truckloads of trash if there is a bio-hazardous bag in the bunch. They do accept some red bags during the holidays, but never those with a bio-hazardous label.
