Douglas County Sheriff: highway shooting not random

DOUGLAS COUNTY, KS (KCTV) -

A three-mile stretch of Highway 59 south of Lawrence was shut down to allow detectives to investigate a shooting.

Southbound travel was stopped between 1100 Road and N 650 Road in Douglas County. Traffic was rerouted onto Old U.S. 59.

The road closed about 2 p.m. Tuesday. Authorities said it reopened by 5 p.m.

The Douglas County Sheriff's Office said a 24-year-old Lawrence man suffered gunshot wounds while driving in the area. The injured man was rushed via medical helicopter to Stormont-Vail hospital in Topeka where he is recovering.

Investigators do not believe this was a random act of violence, but are waiting until the investigation is complete to make their final determination.

"We are confident that 59 Highway is a safe road to travel in Douglas County, day or night," the sheriff's office wrote in a news release.

Authorities don't have any suspect or suspect vehicle description.

Anyone with information is asked to call the sheriff's office at 785-841-0007 or Crime Stoppers at 785-843-8477.
