Desperate parents hope to raise awareness about plight of preemies

OVERLAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

Charlotte Brown weighed just a pound and 7 ounces and was 11 inches long when she was born a month ago.

She has gained just 4 ounces and faces an uphill battle. Her parents are doing everything they can for their little fighter and other preemie babies.

"It's not something you can prepare for," Samantha Brown said.

She was just 25 weeks pregnant when she began to hemorrhage and her daughter was born at Overland Park Regional Medical Center. Charlotte is what as known as a "micro-preemie," and doctors initially didn't think she would live more than 24 hours.

Her parents have since learned that she has congenital adrenal hyperplasia, which is a genetic condition that affects the ability of her adrenal glands to make some vital hormones. The rare condition means she'll need medication every day for the rest of her life.

Robby and Samantha Brown now drive every day to and from their Kearney home to keep vigil by the side of their daughter, who they call Charlie. They are struggling to pay for gas and they are facing mounting medical bills, and one of them will likely need to quit their job so they can stay home and care for her.

A fund-raising website has been set up for Charlotte Brown and her parents' expenses. For more information, click here.

Samantha Brown said they are many other parents in a similar situation.

"There's a couple here with their children from Liberty. That's almost as far as us. There's people from way out in Springfield that come to the hospital. And we're all facing that burden. It's not something you can prepare for," Samantha Brown said.

Charities don't help in such situations, she said. Parents of micro preemies need help and support, she said.

"Just a hand up, not a hand out," she said.
