ARLINGTON, VA (CNN) - Families of our nation's fallen heroes visited their loved ones' graves at the Arlington National Cemetery to mark Memorial Day.

Among the mourners was Brittany Jacobs.

She brought her 3-year-old son to the tomb of his father, Marine Sgt. Christopher Jacobs.

"His dad would be very proud," Brittany Jacobs said. "To me it's very important for me to raise him and let him know about his father. His dad would want him to know about him and I want him to know about him and how great of a man he was. I want him to always grow up knowing it and seeing it. I don't' want it to ever come as a shock to him. This morning, on the way here he was asking questions: 'Mommy, why can't daddy come from Heaven? Is daddy hurting?' And I'm like those are the hard things we're going through right now."

Jacobs says she tells her son that daddy is not hurting and is in heaven.

"I said, 'He can't come see us. He's in our hearts.' He's having a hard time understanding that. But he's trying and he's wanting to," she said.

The Marine was killed in a training accident.

President Barack Obama plans to lay a wreath at the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier to mark the day.
