KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Tens of thousands of people are headed downtown this Memorial Day weekend for one of the biggest events of the summer.

Hours before Celebration at the Station was scheduled to begin Sunday outside Union Station, people were already showing up to get a good seat.

"It is very emotional, exciting," Kansas City resident Susan Still said.

Still has come for the past 20 years and says there's a reason she keeps coming back.

"It's fun for the kids. Good music, and then they end it with the overture, and they'll have cannons up there on the hill," she said.

But the annual event is more than just about fun. It is great for Kansas City's bottom line. More than 50,000 people are expected to bring in more than $1.7 million to the city.

Laurie Anne Conner and her husband, Dan, are coming to the event for the first time.

"We had no idea. We are excited to come and see everything that is going on, so that's pretty awesome," Conner said.

And while they're excited about the light show, they think their daughter will like the fireworks.

But with loved ones serving oversees, Celebration at the Station has a deeper meaning.

"It is a time of remembrance to thank all of the soldiers who have served our country," Conner said.

Organizers will also honor a veteran with a new home.

The free celebration officially kicks at 8 p.m. outside Union Station.
