Kansas City places third in national BBQ survey

Anger and outrange are sweeping through the metro as consumers and barbecue producers respond to a new ranking of Kansas City barbecue.

Third. Third behind not one, but two cities in Tennessee - Memphis and Nashville.

Travel + Leisure Magazine's new reader survey, "America's Best City's for Barbecue," placed our beloved city's treasured barbecue third behind the "que" of those two pig-centric cities, and the news is being met with what can best be described as a combination of hurt, furor and indignation.

Craig Adcock of Belly Up BBQ said the results were interesting.

"Memphis, Carolina, Texas - these are the areas where you'll find artisans elevating the BBQ scene both professionally and from the streets. I always enjoy seeing the big three rotate from one to three, and from three to one. One thing I do know, when you say 'Kansas City,' tofu isn't the first thing that pops into your mind."

Okay, maybe hurt, furor and indignation was a bit strong, but clearly there are some ruffled feathers out there following Kansas City's "show" finish. 

Duane Daughtery of Mr. Doggity Foods, who makes some masterful barbecue sauces, had a stronger, hotter, response.

"Not only do I cater BBQ in KC, and I'm a certified judge, but I have traveled for a living for the last three decades. I've eaten BBQ in all three of these cities (and dozens of others). Memphis is very good, but entirely pork-centric. I wouldn't put Nashville in my top 20. Kansas City has more BBQ restaurants, more diversity and consistently higher quality than any other city in the U.S., and frankly, it's not even close," he said.  

How about John Martellaro, former food editor of the Kansas City Star, and a man known to smoke, and eat, a butt or two?

"Memphis, I don't agree with, but find acceptable. County music Disneyland, however, is ridiculous," Martellaro concluded.

There you go, not only denial, but an insult to boot.

But, best was saved for last. This was the reaction of Octavio Silva, husband of current Kansas City Star Food Editor Jill Silva, a renowned foodie and really good cook in his own right. What's more, he's Brazilian, a country that knows a thing or two about cooking meat.

"These are Travel + Leisure's readers' opinions only. What do they really know about BBQ or food? The ability to travel and eat does not make one an expert," Silva pointed out.

Silva nailed it. Not only was the survey wrong, but the people responding to the survey have no idea what they're talking about.

Now, that's some furor, hurt and indignation - with an exclamation point.
