INDEPENDENCE, MO (KCTV) -

Thursday was a day of celebration at Centerpoint Medical Center.

One family, nearly killed by a shooter, got a chance to meet with the first responders that saved their lives.

It's a day Pamela and Carl Bryant's daughter Kari wasn't sure she'd ever see.

"It really devastated me. I was told that both of my parents were shot," Kari Bryant said.

The Bryant's lives were saved by quick thinking and quick work by two EMTs. When they arrived on the scene the first responders said it was pretty bad.

"They were critically hurt, shot multiple times," Jennifer Nance said.

But the couple survived.

"I'm excited. I'm excited to see them today," Echo Burns, another first responder, said.

Thursday afternoon the Bryants got to meet the EMS crews that saved their lives. The family said they can never repay them for all they did.

"It goes pretty deep to the heart. You owe them so much," said Carl Bryant, who was shot five times.

The circumstances as to why the Bryant's neighbor shot them both in January are still unclear. It started out as a neighbor-to-neighbor dispute, but ended with the Bryants being shot 11 times in total.

"I remember me and Carl laying there talking to each other to make sure we were both OK and he said 'Honey, are you OK?' And I said ‘Yeah, I'm fine. Are you OK honey?'" said Pam Bryant, who was shot six times.

Both said the people they met saved their lives.

"It's wonderful, it's great. You never think you're going to get to meet the people that saved your life," Pam Bryant said.

The neighbor who is accused of shooting the couple is still in custody as he awaits a court date.

The Bryants said they're just happy to be alive.

"I think they are amazing people," Pam Bryant said.
