KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -
Police said their lengthy standoff with a suspect ended after they entered a Kansas City, KS, apartment and found the man dead inside.
The suspect was identified as 24-year-old Charles D. Broadway of KCK.
Kansas City, KS, Police said they responded to an incident at the Brougham Estates II apartments on North 73rd Terrace, which included reports of multiple shots fired, shortly before 7 p.m. At the scene, police say a man fired at officers from a unit inside one of the apartment buildings and they returned fire.
No officers were hit. It's unclear if the suspect was struck. He was barricaded inside a unit in the complex, which was surrounded by SWAT teams. As a precaution, neighboring residents were evacuated.
Two roommates spoke Friday night. One was waiting to get back into the apartments and the other was trapped inside.
"I heard a whole bunch of sirens, then I heard gunshots and I went outside and police officers were shooting," said Kendra Lawrence, who was stuck inside.
"She's panicking. She's got a kid, he's 15 and he's special needs. And he's upset, he doesn't know what's going on," said Bonnie Castro, who was stuck outside.
The Brougham II apartments are adjacent to Kansas City, Kansas Community College, which was closed. Students in the college's dorms as well as nearby residents were also advised to remain inside.
A woman who didn't want to be named said she lives North 74th Street right behind the college. She said she heard four shots about 7 p.m. and called 911.
Another neighbor also spoke about the terrifying experience.
"They came to the door repeatedly just to check on us because I don't think anyone else was there - everyone else got stopped and turned around. We were still in the apartment, so we were pretty much the only ones there and we were right behind the apartment where it was going down at," Michael Pace said.
The woman said she could see police in the college's parking lot from her house and, when she called back to find out what was going on, she was told to stay inside.
Shortly before 11:30 p.m. police said they sent in a robot and found the suspect lying motionless on the floor. A SWAT team entered and found him dead. No one else was inside the apartment.
The cause of Broadway's death will be determined through an examination by the Wyandotte County Coroner.
