Authorities rescued a
fully-clothed swimmer from the Ohio River Wednesday morning who reportedly fled
from multiple nearby car accidents.
Cincinnati police and
fire were dispatched at about 8:30 a.m. to the river after a man was spotted
struggling in the water between the Roebling Suspension Bridge and the Clay
Wade Bailey Bridge.
Nate Young said he was seen going under several times and even tied his shoes
to his belt loops "thinking that might provide some buoyancy."
Authorities used a
float tube to pull the man onto a rescue boat. Young said the man's blood
alcohol level was "three or four times over the legal limit."
He was transported to
the University of Cincinnati Medical Center for evaluation.
with the Kenton County Sheriff's Office and Covington Police Department,
Cincinnati police learned the man was driving and hit another vehicle on
Interstate 75 south near the 5th Street exit.
Police said the man
fled the scene and was involved in a second crash with a barrier. He then took
off on foot toward the Ohio River.
Young estimated that
the man floated approximately three-fourths to one mile downstream before he
