SPRINGFIELD, MA (WSHM) -
District Attorney Mark Mastroianni said the homicide of Wayne Edwards was a legally justified self-defense move and necessary to ensure Trooper Thiago Miranda's safety.
A 15-page detailed report was issued Tuesday from the Hampden District Attorney's Office and Mastroianni said the early morning officer-involved shooting last summer was necessary to ensure the trooper's safety.
It started as an early morning traffic stop after Miranda saw a BMW traveling at close to 100 mph.
Miranda pulled the BMW over near the I-291 and I-91 split and identified the driver as Wayne Edwards, who became combative when Miranda attempted to arrest him.
A physical altercation ensued that led to a fight in the driver's seat of the car. Edwards was then able to turn the ignition on and get the car in gear while the altercation took place.
The trooper warned Edwards he would shoot if he attempted to drive away. When Edwards began to drive off while the trooper's arm was pinned in the car with his feet dragging, the trooper shot Edwards twice in the abdomen.
Edwards then sped off in the BMW and Miranda called for emergency backup. First aide was administered to Edwards when authorities found him, but he died in the hospital. His female passenger was treated for minor injuries.
Two loaded handguns were found in the BMW.
Mastroianni said the state trooper acted in self-defense. His actions have been excused.
