Orrick cancels classes for the rest of year due to tornado damage

Posted: Updated:
ORRICK, MO (KCTV) -

The Orrick School District has canceled all classes for the remainder of the year due to a tornado that heavily damaged district buildings.

This weekend's high school graduation has already been moved to the performing arts center at Excelsior Springs High School. The graduation will be at 2 p.m. Sunday.

Because of the extraordinary circumstances, the Missouri Department of Elementary and Secondary Education "has granted us forgiveness for these days and we will not be required to make them up."

Some school activities will be held as scheduled.

  • The band will practice for graduation at Richmond Middle School on Thursday. A bus will leave the Orrick Commuter Parking Lot at 8 a.m. and an instructor will have instruments stored in his classroom.
  •  First-graders will go on their scheduled field trip. On Thursday, a bus will leave the commuter parking lot at 8:30 a.m. More details can be found at this link.
  • The band and graduating seniors will practice for graduation at the Excelsior Springs Performing Arts Center on Friday. Buses will leave the commuter parking lot at 8:30 a.m.
  • The second- and third-grade field trips scheduled for Tuesday will be held next week. More details will be announced by the district.
  • Preschool and kindergarten graduation will be rescheduled.

High school students needing personal items from their lockers can request them via the form at this link.

Personal items for elementary students will be sacked up and made available at a later date.

"The status of summer school at this point is shaky. We will let everyone know whether or not we'll be able to have it as soon as we have more information," the district concluded in its statement.
