Man finds live grenade in Roeland Park home

ROELAND PARK, KS (KCTV) -

A Roeland Park man made a rather startling discovery Sunday afternoon - a live hand grenade.

Police said the grenade was in a box belonging to the man's grandfather, who had just brought it over earlier in the day.

The man lives in the 4900 block of West 51st Street in Roeland Park.

"I saw the police line, and then a whole bunch of police cars, and I was like, 'Oh OK, something's going on down here,'" resident Shelby Edwards said. "We actually thought someone died down there. We were like, 'Oh Lord, not down here.'"

Turns out it was nothing like that, but it was still scary and potentially very dangerous.

After finding the grenade in the box, Roeland Park police Sgt. Sylvester Birdsong said the resident carried the box out of his basement and into his front yard. He then called police.

Officers responded, and after assessing the situation, called in the Olathe bomb squad.

A member of the unit suited up in protective gear, grabbed the grenade out of the box, and placed it in the squad's containment unit, ending what had been a tense couple of hours.

About eight homes were evacuated as authorities secured and then disposed of the hand grenade.

The incident ended at about 5:30 p.m.
