Thirteen penguins join others at zoo

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Friday, 13 penguins marched into the snow in the Helzberg Penguin Plaza at the Kansas City Zoo.

The nine Gentoo penguins and four King penguins all traveled from Sea World San Antonio and, after being in quarantine for the last 30 days and completing medical check-ups, were ready to join the others in the flock.

"They're interested in anything new or exciting. They're in there wanting to introduce themselves, so they're just checking each other out," said Andrea O' Daniels, the animal supervisor.

Zookeepers say penguins are used to living together in large groups of different varieties, so everyone should get along.

Find out more about all the birds during feeding time for the penguins. The cold water penguins at Helzberg Penguin Plaza, that includes the Gentoos, Kings and Rockhoppers, will be fed at 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. daily.

With the addition of the 13, that brings the total number of penguins at the zoo to 50.
