They're the largest vehicles on the road, but how safe are the big rigs and trucks people pass on the highway?
A three-day check by the Missouri Highway Patrol finds many shouldn't even be on the road. They inspected nearly 450 trucks over three days in the Kansas City area. They found 851 violations and pulled 28 drivers and 68 trucks off the road.
From a violation as small as a loose lug nut to more serious violations like having a driver drunk behind the wheel or driving without a license to drive a big rig, the Missouri Highway Patrol operation aims to crack down on truck drivers breaking the law, all the while keeping everyone safe.
"They're out here for truck safety and we want to make sure we comply," said Darrell, who did not want to use his last name.
Darrell has been driving a semi for Sysco for 12 years.
"We pre-trip the truck on the morning before we leave to make sure it's safe and up to standards, and hopefully they don't find anything wrong," he said.
The Missouri Highway Patrol commercial officer checks everything from Darrell's license to problems he may not know about, like tire tread and bad brakes.
Darrell said he's thankful he checked out Ok with no violations.
"There are those ones that are out there that are trying to skirt the law," said Sgt. Bill Lowe.
Lowe said the area's annual truck check aims to get the bad drivers off the streets and keep everyone safe.
"If that means we have to give someone a ticket or put them out of service until that equipment is safe to be traveled on these highways then that's what we'll do," he said.
The three-day operation netted six drivers arrested for drugs and 155 citations in total.
"The majority of the drivers that are placed out of service are for the license violations or they're out of hours to be driving," Lowe said.
Lowe said the majority of trucks are good trucks and the same goes for their drivers.
It's not just a three-day operation. MHP says it can stop drivers anytime for any reason.
