Judge hears appeals of NC legislators on subpoenas

Posted: Updated:

North Carolina legislative leaders don't believe they should be required to hand over emails and documents about last year's election overhaul law, despite subpoenas asking for them.

Attorneys for the state appealed a federal magistrate judge's ruling weeks ago that said the legislators didn't have broad immunity from the subpoenas due to their positions. A U.S. District Court judge in Winston-Salem planned Friday to hear arguments over the appeals, including those of lawyers for groups who challenged parts of the elections law and want the documents.

The elections law reduces the number of early voting days and eliminates same-day registration during the early period. Civil rights groups and voters who sued say several provisions are discriminatory. They want the provisions blocked for the November elections while the lawsuit continues.
