Girl shot while turkey hunting

Posted: Updated:

A high school student was shot while turkey hunting at Smithville Lake, and her family hopes authorities can find the person who fired the shots.

The 18-year-old teen was shot while hunting by herself about 10 a.m. Wednesday. The person who shot her left without providing assistance.

The girl's mother posted pictures of her daughter's wounds on her Facebook page. In her post, the mother asks for help in identifying the shooter.

"When she was shot, she started yelling and the guy took off. Luckily she was able to get out of the woods and to her truck to drive herself to the hospital," the victim's mother says in her Facebook post. "She may have to have surgery on her foot to remove shot that is lodged against her tendon. Please share and maybe the person can be caught."

This occurred in Clinton County near access area 2 or 3. This is the first hunting-related shooting at Smithville Lake in 14 years.

The girl and her mother declined an interview request.

This is the third week of turkey season, which draws hunters to Smithville Lake.

"I'm a hunter and I believe that the effective range of a shotgun is about 100 yards," said Fred O'Neal who was fishing at the lake on Thursday. He said he is not worried about shooting accidents.

But Connie Kimsey who lives in the area is worried.

"We get frightened especially in the winter time when it's deer season knowing the shots can go for a long time," she said.

Kimsey hopes the girl makes a complete recovery.

"That just makes me so sad and so afraid for her family," she said.

Missouri law says anyone 16 years and older who has completed a hunter safety course can legally hunt alone, but park rangers suggest taking someone with you.

The Missouri Department of Conservation is overseeing the investigation. The Clinton County Sheriff's Office is assisting.
