Kansas City, KS, police said the car was taken from a Phillips 66 gas station, located at 1300 N. 38th St., about midnight Wednesday.
KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -
A 3-year-old girl is safe after crooks stole an SUV with the child in the back seat at a KCK gas station.
Officer Thomas Tomasic, a spokesman for the Kansas City, KS, Police Department, said police rushed to a Phillips 66, located at N. 38th Street and Washington Avenue, shortly before midnight Wednesday.
"I just got the call saying someone had took the kid," said Otis Lowe, the child's grandfather.
Lowe said his son made a late night run to the convenience store up the street. He left his SUV running with his 3-year-old daughter asleep in the back seat. Police say two men jumped in and took off.
"That's not easy to handle. It's a scary situation," Lowe said.
Lowe thinks the suspects had no idea a little girl was in the back seat until after they pulled out of the parking lot. Investigators said the suspects pulled right back into the next parking lot and abandoned the 2001 Chevrolet Blazer across the street at a CVS near North 38th Street and State Avenue.
"It's very frustrating. It's messed up," Lowe said.
The child was found safe inside the car, unhurt. For that, family and neighbors in the area are grateful.
It's also a reminder how quickly a situation can take a wrong turn.
"You can replace a car, but you can't replace a kid," said someone who lives in the area.
"Safety of the kid should be first because you never know, you never know," said Vaughn Taylor, who also lives nearby.
The two suspects were taken into custody. Charges have yet to be filed.
