KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

A throwdown between a woman and an off-duty police officer at a Northland daycare landed the mother in jail.

That mom was inside the breezeway of the facility when she allegedly lashed out by shoving, pinching, biting and even swinging a fire extinguisher at another parent, who is also an officer.

It happened at Sweet Beginnings, located at Northeast 93rd Street and North Oak Trafficway, shortly after 4 p.m. Tuesday.

Two weeks prior, the staff told Kelsi Hoem not to come back because of past behavior and unpaid fees. But she did, and what she supposedly did next was way out there.

"She took it to a new level that was unexpected and very scary," daycare owner Jessica Sweet said.

A police statement says the 22-year-old mom grabbed another child's Minnie Mouse coat, then ran out of the daycare, leaving her 2- and 4-year-old children behind.

When she returned, the staff refused to buzz her in. That was when another mom, an off-duty police officer, showed up to get her child. The officer told Hoem to leave.

Hoem allegedly "pushed" the officer, and both "fell to the ground." Hoem "had keys," according to the charges and attempted to stab them into the officer's arm.

The next attempt, police say, involved a fire extinguisher, which the officer blocked with her arm.

Sweet says the children, in the care of her teachers, seemed unaffected and unaware of what was happening just outside the doors.

The children Sweet is most worried about now are Hoem's two children.

"The sweetest, very smart little babies. They deserve so much," she said.

Hoem has been charged with one count of assaulting a law enforcement officer.

Police say Hoem wrote a confession and apology to the officer, then scratched out the apology portion.
