FAIRWAY, KS (KCTV) -

One boxed drink brand is getting a new look to make customers more comfortable about what is inside, and it follows some images of mold in many brands' boxes.

Capri Sun says the launch of the see-through bottom should be filling the shelves at the end of the month.

The company said many factors prompted the change, but there have been high-profile reports of that brand and others having mold inside the boxes.

It is something with a high gross-out factor but not as big of a health risk as one might think, according to a medical toxicologist.

"I would probably throw it out. But if you were to have been drinking on it and then you noticed that you had a little bit of something floating in it, I don't know that I would necessarily worry too much about it," said Dr. Stephen Thornton, medical director at the University of Kansas Hospital Poison Control Center.

That is because mold, or fungus, is everywhere.

There are cheese molds, creating tangy flavor palates, and peanut fungus, monitored to keep it in a healthy range. There is fungus on grain and don't forget about mushrooms, which pretty much are fungus.

Thornton says even the dreaded black mold doesn't live up to the hype.

"Sure mold can worsen some allergies, give you some breathing problems, but again you have to be exposed to a lot of it, almost to the point where the air is cloudy with mold particles," Thornton said.

The same goes with drinking it, Thornton says. It is all in how much, unless someone is in a high risk group with suppressed immunity or an extreme mold allergy.

That is why Fairway mother Rachael Clingan likes the new see-through style.

"His younger brother has a lot of allergies, and that could really compromise his immune system. That is a problem because there are so many kids out there today who have severe allergies," she said.

But Thornton says it is all a matter of degrees. Anything with a lot of mold should smell and taste "off" too. Otherwise, mold is unavoidable.

"I do think this is probably a phenomena that is a lot more common than people realize," Thornton said.

One thing parents can do is to give a box a little squeeze and be sure there are no leaks. A leak means air, which means that packaging that stands in for refrigeration went bad.

Thornton says that is a concern because of food poisoning, which comes not from mold but bacteria.
