You may think your cell phone number typically is very private. There is a lot of talk about your private cell phone number going public.

Rumors continue to circulate all over the Internet on whether or not your cell phone number will be going public. The question is if this rumor is legitimate or a scam.

"I've heard this for years and I can tell you that my contacts that I've talked to have said there's no way that they would allow that to happen," said Dick Eppstein, President, Better Business Bureau.

Although it doesn't look like your cell phone number will be going out to the public anytime soon, one thing that still does happen quite often are the infamous robo-calls and calls from telemarketers. Scam artists are out there, so you have to do what you can to protect yourself from cell phone scams.

"You've got to be very careful who you give your cell phone number out to. We always encourage people to use the Federal Trade Commission Do Not Call list," said Eppstein.

You can register both cell phones and land lines for the Do Not Call Registry. To register by telephone, call 1-888-382-1222. You must call from the phone number that you want to register. To register online, visit donotcall.gov. You will have to respond to a confirmation email.
