Hopewell rescue crews search James after reports of car going into river

HOPEWELL, VA (WWBT) -

Hopewell and Chesterfield rescue crews were called to the James after reports of a car going into the river.

According to Hopewell Police, witnesses say a man intentionally drove around barricades and into the James River at Old City Point National Park just before noon Saturday.

When police arrived, the man was nearly out of the water.

The Chesterfield dive team was called to verify no one else was in the car.

The driver of the vehicle was taken to John Randolph Medical Center for evaluation.
