SUMTER, SC (WIS) -
A Sumter County man said cocaine fueled his rage when he violently beat two women and a girl with a hammer at a home on Bethel Church Road, according to the Sumter County Sheriff's Office.
Jason Dustin Compton, 33, was taken into custody Saturday and charged with murder, two counts of attempted murder, kidnapping, and attempted criminal sexual conduct.
Compton complained of chest pain and was taken to Tuomey Regional Medical Center for treatment, Sumter County Sheriff Anthony Dennis said Sunday.
Lt. Robert Burnish said deputies were called to a home in the 4300 block of Bethel Church Road and found Compton outside smoking a cigarette.
A 14-year-old girl, who was bleeding from the head, came running outside and told deputies Compton beat her and her 44-year-old mother, identified as Tracey Koepfler, with a hammer, Burnish said.
Burnish said after Compton was in custody, deputies found Koepfler in the front living room of the home with severe head trauma.
Deputies also found a 46-year-old disabled woman in the home who had also been physically assaulted by Compton, Burnish said.
The teen also told deputies Compton choked her with his hand around her neck and attempted to suffocate the 46-year-old woman with his hand over her nose and mouth.
"They said while he was doing this he demanded they undress and when they refused, Compton forced the 14-year-old into the living room where she saw her mother in the chair with head injuries," Burnish said. "Compton again demanded the 14-year-old get undressed, and when she refused Compton began beating the 44-year-old mother about the head again, in the presence of the teen. All the while Compton refused to allow any of the victims to leave."
During that time, the 46-year-old woman was able to call 911, Burnish said.
The victims were transported to Tuomey Regional Medical Center where the Koepfler died from her injuries, Burnish said.
Coroner Harvin Bullock said Compton's alleged cocaine use should not be an excuse in this case.
"That's ridiculous," Bullock said. "What he did was wrong. He knew it was wrong. This was just brutal and totally senseless."
The teen and the 46-year-old woman are expected to be okay.
