Anthony Wayne High School evacuated due to overheated exhaust fan, students safe

Posted: Updated:
WHITEHOUSE, OH (Toledo News Now) -

Anthony Wayne High School has been evacuated because of an overheated exhaust fan. Officials say student are not in any danger, but were sent home because of smoke.

The overheated fan produced heavy smoke, which forced the school to be evacuated. Students were taken to the junior high and elementary buildings, which are right next door. The smoke was confined to the high school building.

Whitehouse firefighters set up exhaust fans to air out the building. They later determined the air quality was too poor to send students back inside on Friday.

Parents were allowed to pick up students at 12:15 p.m., and students with cars were allowed to leave.

The building will be open from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday for students to return and get any items left in the school.

The district's superintendent says all the fire drills students did in the past paid off.

"All of the kids got out in a safe way so all the work and prep of having to go through fire drills paid off today," said Anthony Wayne Superintendent Jim Fritz.
