MISSION WOODS, KS (KCTV) -
A duck is swimming in the Northland with an arrow stuck in its neck after a case of animal cruelty that has one Mission Woods resident outraged.
Someone shot an arrow at a duck in Deborah Macon's backyard, and now she's trying to save her feathered friend.
"Just the incredible cruelty of it," she said.
Macon is redoing her home in Mission Woods, and over the last few months, she has had a couple of visitors to keep her company.
"I first saw them in the spring, and they've been there all year," she said.
But within the last two days, someone shot the mallard with an arrow. When Macon saw that, she tried to help the duck.
"I tried to get the duck. I hung out for about an hour, but I couldn't get within 4 or 5 feet of him," she said.
That's when she called for help.
Animal control officers say they get a lot of these types of calls - cruelty against geese and ducks. But Macon says this is her backyard, and she doesn't understand why anyone would want to hurt the peaceful creatures.
In April 2011, someone shot an arrow into a goose at Penguin Park in the Northland.
Kimberly Hess with Lakeside Nature Center said Kansas City-area waterfowl are becoming targets, and they are not sure why.
"Penguin Park and Shamer Park ... we've had a big problem with people shooting Canada geese with arrows. A number have come into our hospital with multiple injuries, most have been releasable," Hess said.
Attempts to capture the duck were unsuccessful. The group says they'll come back Friday and try again.
As for Macon, she hopes that people will think first before doing something like this again.
"It just brought tears to my eyes, it made me furious. It made me completely choke up at the cruelty of it. To just be mean to a duck ... to just let it walk around in pain and torture, it's just unspeakable," Macon said.
Macon says the two ducks are not her pets, just since spring they've made her backyard pool their home.
She plans to pay for any medical expenses that may occur if they are able to capture the bird.
