KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -
Volunteers spread their efforts around the metro Saturday, cleaning up their community.
Councilman Jermaine Reed was on hand for the 3rd District cleanup aimed at beautifying local neighborhoods.
Louis Armstrong always plays with his brothers in Jim Nutter Park, located at 37th Street and Woodland Avenue, and he's tired of the mess he sees. So he and a few Boy Scouts decided to take part in helping to clean it up.
"This is great being able to help clean up the community," Armstrong said.
They weren't alone. Several members of the Ivanhoe Neighborhood pitched in, including Yolanda Young.
"We believe that a neighborhood that's clean sort of transmits a certain attitude. It shows that the people who live here care," she said.
It wasn't just the Ivanhoe Neighborhood that was cleaning things up. More than 10 neighborhoods took part in the cleanup effort in District 3, and it's hoped that for every bag of trash they pick up the neighborhood becomes that much safer.
"A community that is clean certainly can trickle down to a safe community," Reed said.
He helped organize the event and didn't hesitate to get his hands dirty for the people he represents.
"They live and work and play every single day in this neighborhood, and it's important that they have a clean place to live," he said.
"It'll be better for us to play. It'll be a better environment for us," Armstrong said.
