Bride's luggage catches fire day before wedding

Posted: Updated:
SAVANNAH, GA (WTOC) -

This might be a bride's worst nightmare: the day before her wedding, one bride watched all of her clothes and some of her wedding decorations go up in flames.

The good news is no one was hurt, but this isn't the spark they had in mind for their romantic weekend in Savannah.

Getting pampered with pedicures, that's how Sarah Giacinti planned to start her wedding weekend.

"I'm super excited to get married. I'm marrying my best friend, so who could ask for anything else," said Giacinti.

She even expected to have some last minute errands for her Savannah wedding Saturday. What she didn't plan was losing all of her luggage in a car fire on the way there.

"Once we crossed the Georgia line, Mason called me and said 'your car's on fire. You need to pull over now.'"

Mason Galloway, Giacinti's fiance, was driving behind her in another car and immediately noticed smoke and flames coming from the back of her Jeep.

"I noticed, what I thought was the vehicle burst into flames from the rear. I immediately told her pull over right now, car's on fire," said Galloway.

They both pulled to the side of the road, now realizing their luggage, sitting on their luggage rack, was fully engulfed in flames.

They were able to pull the luggage away from the car, but it wasn't until a Georgia Department of Transportation employee showed up with a fire extinguisher that they got the fire out.

"The first thing is Sarah and the dog. I wanted to make sure they were safe. That was the first thing. After we got them out of the car, it was just a matter of minimizing the damage," said Galloway.

All of Sarah's clothes were ruined, including her hand-made wedding decorations, but the wedding gods were on her side.

Her dress was in another vehicle and wasn't touched.

"I'm just glad to be alive," said Giacinti. "You know, it could have been much, much worse and that I got my dog out and that my car's ok."

While they may have to go on without a few of the essentials at the ceremony, this wedding weekend will surely be a good story to tell the kids someday.

The happy couple will say I do on Saturday at 2 p.m. in Orleans Square.
