Low-cost carrier Spirit Airlines launching flights at KCI this summer

Posted: Updated:

Spirit Airlines officially announced Wednesday morning that it is moving into Terminal C at Kansas City International Airport.

The low-cost, no-frills carrier will provide nonstop flights to and from Dallas-Fort Worth International Airport, Chicago O'Hare, Detroit and Las Vegas on Aug. 7. Service to Houston's George Bush Intercontinental Airport will be added on Aug. 8.

There will be one departure from each city to KCI and one departure from KCI to each city daily.

Spirit is known for offering rock-bottom fares and charging for carry-on bags in overhead bins and beverages that are complimentary on other carriers. Those costs have helped lead to Spirit being one of the most complained about by customers.

Fares can be as low as $30.

Spirit Vice President Mark Kopczak said the airline allows customers to pick and choose the services they want to pay for, thus getting them the lowest cost possible rather than having to pay a flat rate for services they may not use or want.

"They interpret that as getting nickeled and dimed," he said. "It's not really the case."

He said Spirit offers fares that are "tough to beat."

"With our unique product, value-conscious travelers get to enjoy keeping more money in their pocket to spend on the good times when they get to their destination," Kopczak said.

Kansas City Aviation Director Mark VanLoh said Spirit will offer to KCI travelers markets that both leisure and business customers will benefit from.

Traveler Gail Harris is ecstatic Spirit Airlines has landed at KCI.

"I think it sounds like a great idea. I think anything that makes travel less expensive for people is going to be a great option," she said. "KCI needs another airline that has good fares."
