The 27-year-old told the judge he could not afford an attorney, so he will be appointed a public defender. He is being held on a $1 million cash bond.

His preliminary hearing is set for May 1.

Whitaker, who had been under surveillance by police for about a week before his arrest, has been charged with two counts of shooting into a motor vehicle and injuring a person, seven counts of shooting into a motor vehicle and nine counts of armed criminal action.

Whitaker was arrested Thursday night at a Grandview home near Interstate 49, one of the highways that intersects at the Three Trails Crossing.
