Community spiritually, financially comes to aid of family

Posted: Updated:

Not just once, but now a second time this week Blue Valley High School students are coming together in honor of a fellow classmate.

Over spring break while on vacation with his family senior Alex Fraser severely injured his spinal cord in a surfing accident. He was taken to Denver at the beginning of April for his next round of treatments and Saturday the community came together to help the Fraser family.

"It's such an impressive demonstration of the compassion and caring that this community extends to people in need," said Alex's father, Mike Fraser.

Mike Fraser was in shock as he saw hundreds come to Blue Valley High School on Saturday to help his family and raise money for his son.

"I couldn't be prouder to live in this community," Mike Fraser said.

Alex Fraser hurt his spinal cord surfing in Mexico over spring break and the medical bills are adding up.

"Every bit helps and quite frankly," the father said.

But the support isn't just financial.

"The prayers and the positive thoughts and vibes from people we don't even know helps as much as everything else," Mike Fraser said.

Ricky Shull is a junior at Blue Valley and he helped organize the fundraiser.

"We wanted to focus our effort on helping him as much as possible," Shull said. "Show that as a community, not just Blue Valley family but the whole city in general, everyone is just loving, appreciative towards everyone."

But with the death of another student, Reat Underwood, in a senseless shooting by a known white supremacist on Sunday, many say it's difficult to stay positive.

"There's been stress, anxiety, sleepless nights," Shull said.

That's why Mike Fraser knows his son is so appreciative of all the help.

"He'd say ‘thank you, thank you, thank you' and say thank you again," he said.
