Highway shooter victim says he is now relieved

KANSAS CITY, MO (KCTV) -

Three people were injured in the series of shootings that Mohammed Whitaker is now charged in – two were struck in the leg and the other in the arm. None of their injuries were serious.

After hearing news of Whitaker's arrest and the subsequent charges against him, one of the first victims whose car was hit riddled by bullets said he can now breathe a sigh of relief.

For the past month Thomas McFarlin has driven in fear.

"Constant going through that area every day, watching over my shoulder and paying attention to who's around me in the cars," he said.

This is after bullet holes pierced his 2012 Ford Fusion while he was driving home from his son's basketball game.

"I did not realize it, that I was being shot at at the time," McFarlin said.

McFarlin said his biggest fear about the shooting was retaliation.

"Could this person ever find out who I am and target me for some reason," he said. "(Another fear is) The intent behind it and it happening over and over again, and could it happen again."

According to authorities it did happen over and over again – at least a dozen times, which is why McFarlin is relieved the man police say is responsible, 27-year-old Mohammed Whitaker, is now behind bars.

"The drive this morning was definitely better and definitely just a relief," McFarlin said.

Despite the arrest and charges, this victim still has a lot of nagging questions.

"What is the motive? Make sure there's only one (shooter) and it's the right guy, you know, connect all the dots," he said.

Yet McFarlin is also thankful to all those who played their part in quickly getting a suspect arrested.

"I think it seems like Kansas City kind of came together a little bit and made this happen," he said.

McFarlin also said he never thought about taking a different route to work even though he was shot at.
