KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

The American Red Cross assisted those who needed help after a fire ripped through the Quail Creek apartment complex and damaged the homes of 34 residents.

The fire was reported late Thursday night and an entire three-story building wound up in flames. No one was injured but the KCK Fire Department estimates the extensive damage at $300,000.

Trena Smith said she wasn't home when she was alerted to the fire via a telephone call. She said she and her family were fortunate that they weren't home. But she is devastated to lose everything, including furniture that she had just bought.

"Thank God for the Red Cross," she said.

The Red Cross assisted at least three other families. Altogether, 18 homes were damaged by fire, smoke or water.

Smith also is grateful to the firefighters.

"It was hard for them to put it out. It was going and going and going. Our whole complex was on fire. The roof and my apartment got water damage really bad," she said. "I just still thank God that we were safe."
