LOUISBURG, KS (KCTV) -

A local community is mourning the death of its second student in just eight months.

Back in August, a quarterback from Louisburg High School lost his life in a car accident. Now sixth-grader Aaron Willard is gone too, a rare victim of bacterial meningitis.

Family friend Debbie Thompson said her grandkids played with 13-year-old Aaron nearly every day, including just last Friday. She was his babysitter most days and remembers him as "one of a kind."

According to Thompson, Aaron's grandmother took care of him, but he was raised by the entire Louisburg community.

"We were his daytime family while his grandmother worked," Thompson said. "Our community, we're just lost and heartbroken."

Aaron's grandmother found him unresponsive in their home over the weekend. He was rushed to Children's Mercy Hospital and died on Tuesday.

The news, Thompson said, is hitting the children especially hard.

"It's hard on us adults. It's harder to see our children suffering."

Even though the 13-year-old with the bright smile is now gone, he is not forgotten.

"I tell them he's in a better place. He's with God. He's in a better place right now."

A candlelight vigil is planned for Aaron on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. right across the street from his home.
