One person dead after shooting on I-635 and I-70

KANSAS CITY, KS (KCTV) -

One person is dead after a shooting on a metro highway, but police say the latest shooting is not related to the recent rash of highway shootings.

It happened on Interstate 635 and Interstate 70 in Kansas City, KS.

Police said both victims walked into the University of Kansas Hospital about 3:34 a.m. One man died at the hospital and the other remains there with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Officers are waiting for the second victim to recover to interview him, but they believe the shooting may have happened on the highway. It's possible that someone shot at the two victims from another vehicle.

In response to a question, Kansas City, MO, Police Chief Darryl Forte tweeted that nothing at this point connects this deadly shooting to the highway shootings. Police say the evidence shows that this is an isolated incident and the pattern does not match the other 12 highway shootings under investigation by federal and local agents.

"The investigation is leading us to believe it did happen on the highway between two vehicles, but we don't think it was a random shooting," said Thomas Tomasic with the Kansas City, KS, Police Department.

The identity of the victims will not be released pending positive identification and family notification.

Police continue to search for the exact crime scene. They ask that anyone with information call the TIPS Hotline at 816-474-TIPS.
