Clay County sheriff takes the plunge for Landon Shaw

CLAY COUNTY, MO (KCTV) -

The plunge for Landon Shaw had the Clay County sheriff splashing around, raising money and challenging other law enforcement officers.

Five-month-old Landon is a sick little boy who is battling a rare childhood cancer. Doctors removed a golf ball-sized tumor from his brain, but he still needs to have chemotherapy and radiation treatments.

One of the fundraisers to help his family is the Cold Water challenge. It involves people jumping into a chilly body of water, collecting pledges for their plunge and then challenging others to do the same.

KCTV5's Heather Staggers took the plunge on April 1 and, in just a week, thousands of others have done the same for little Landon of Tarkio, MO.

Saturday morning the challenge was accepted by the Clay County sheriff.

"I know there are a lot of other sheriffs across the state of Missouri. If I can do it, they can do it," said Sheriff Paul Vescovo.

"Landon is going through a very difficult time right now, fighting his way through cancer and, like thousands of others across the world, we wanted to help him through this way," said Lt. Will Akin.

Thousands of people have taken the plunge and people can see on the Plunge for Landon Facebook page just how many people are reaching out to help the little baby.

More than $65,000 have been raised for the family so far.
