BUNKERVILLE, NV (FOX5) -
Nevada Highway Patrol troopers said a portion of Interstate 15 that was closed Saturday afternoon because of protesters of the recent cattle roundup has reopened.
Trooper Loy Hixson said the interstate was closed in both directions at mile marker 115, just south of Mesquite. The highway was reopened to traffic by 4 p.m.
The protesters were connected to a recent round up of cattle at the Bunkerville ranch of Cliven Bundy by the Bureau of Land Management. The agency has said Bundy owes nearly $1 million in grazing fees, but Bundy has maintained that his family was using the land long before BLM arrived.
A FOX5 photographer at the scene said protesters had gathered under a bridge of the interstate, and were working to free the cattle recently seized by the BLM.
Hixson said many of the protesters were armed, and that posed a threat to passing traffic. He said that resulted in officials closing off part of the interstate.
The BLM announced Saturday that it will "conclude" the herding operation, citing concerns over the safety of its rangers and the public.
