Search for highway shooter includes Leawood home

Posted: Updated:

Police, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Federal Bureau of Investigation were all back out Thursday searching for clues to try and nab the metro's highway shooter.

Both sides of the state line are now a part of the investigation. A home in Leawood, KS, is now involved, and the shooter is still out there.

Mark Chudik has been with the Leawood Police Department for nearly 20 years, and lately talk on the streets has turned to concern as police across the metro look for the shooter.

"Now that everybody's paying attention, maybe we can find something," he said.

The problem is where to look. Investigators remind everyone that it could happen anywhere.

"You can get on the highway and be anywhere in the metro within 30 minutes. Literally, from here to the airport is 30 minutes, so nobody's immune. Just because it's happening in one area doesn't mean it couldn't happen in another area," Chudik said.

Leawood police got involved at the end of March when someone fired shots that hit a house just east of College and Roe. Investigators were back on the scene Thursday hoping dogs could dig up more evidence.

"Of course it's very disturbing. Even if it is random, you don't like those things happening in your community," said Jim Overbay, a Leawood neighbor.

Leawood police say disturbing as it is, that may just be the key to solving it.

"We'll see what shakes out. We've got eyes everywhere looking, and now that the public knows about it, like I said, maybe we'll get lucky," Chudik said.

The reward for information that leads to an arrest now stands at $7,000.
